Located in Kingsport, Tennessee, Symphony of the Mountains produces the work of three musical groups: the Symphony, Voices of the Mountains, and the Youth Orchestra. The organization originated in 1946, when a group of musicians decided to get together and create a civic orchestra, then known as the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra. The first meeting attracted 27 musicians and the first concert was free to the public. In the 1960s, the Kingsport Symphony Youth Orchestra was formed. The group as a whole grew consistently and expanded its outreach, promoting a commitment to service. In 1998, the Orchestra became the premier symphony for both Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, serving a community of 450,000. Today, the orchestra comprises more than 70 musicians.
In recent times, the Symphony of the Mountains group has produced exciting programs devoted to various musical themes, including Mary. B Martin, a celebration of the different seasons, and an homage to baroque music.
